Passing Days

Passing Days

A passing year knocks softly at the door
Carrying echoes already known before
Some dreams faded, some chose to stay
Some prayers broke, some found their way

We learned to smile with silent pain
And dance a little in the rain
Lost a few, held some near
Every farewell taught us to hear

The nights grew long, the heart grew wise
Truth hid itself in simple eyes
As fading days quietly clear
Hope moves toward the coming year

Unspoken resolutions wait inside
Like unopened letters close by
At dawn we stand, ready to start
Welcoming the new year with a brave, gentle heart
